Power shortages may limit growth of AI data centres by 2027: Gartner

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI (Gen AI) technologies is set to strain global power supplies; 40 per cent of AI data centres may face operational challenges by 2027 because of electricity shortages, says a report by Gartner Inc.
The energy demand for data centres is projected to grow by 160 per cent over the next two years, pushing electricity consumption to unprecedented levels.
Power usage in AI data centres is expected to rise from 261 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2024 to 500 TWh by 2027, more than double the 2023 levels.
