MLA Jitendra Awhad approaches Supreme Court supporting Places of Worship Act, says it fosters national unity

The Supreme Court was hearing the matter wherein Dr. Jitendra Satish Awhad, a Member of Legislative Assembly in Maharashtra from Mumbra-Kalwa, sought to intervene in the proceedings challenging the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991.

The Supreme Court in the case was hearing the matter wherein Dr. Jitendra Satish Awhad, a Member of Legislative Assembly in Maharashtra from Mumbra-Kalwa, sought to intervene in the proceedings challenging the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991.

The court in the case emphasized the Act's critical role in preserving secularism, fostering communal harmony, and preventing tensions that could disrupt national unity. The MLA, belonging to NCP i.e., Sharad Pawar, supported the constitutionality of the legislation.

Dr. Jitendra Satish Awhad noted that Mumbra-Kalwa became a refuge for those displaced by the 1992-93 Bombay riots, leading to social and physical divides.
