MCD hospitals to adopt zero-waste model

Delhi’ civic hospitals are set for a major overhaul in waste management, with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) preparing to implement a zero-waste-to-landfill model across nine major healthcare facilities as part of its broader push towards sustainable urban management.

The initiative, drawn up after detailed baseline surveys at four hospitals, aims to ensure that solid waste generated within hospital campuses is scientifically managed through source segregation, composting and recycling, thereby significantly reducing the burden on landfill sites.

Officials said the project is being undertaken with technical support from a women-led non-profit organisation working in the field of sustainable waste management. The objective is to create a replicable model that can eventually be expanded to other healthcare institutions.

‘‘The surveys have helped identify hospital-specific requirements and the interventions needed to move towards a zero-waste-to-landfill framework,’’ a senior MCD official said.
