Is China Trying To Revive Bangladesh's Lalmonirhat Airbase Near India's Border?

In 2019, the Bangladesh government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, proposed establishing an aviation and aerospace university at the site.
World War II-era airfield known as Lalmonirhat Airbase, in northern Bangladesh, located just a few kilometers from the Indian border, is drawing renewed attention following reports of increased Chinese activity at the site.
CHINESE INTEREST The Lalmonirhat airbase — once a strategic Allied hub during World War II — has resurfaced in regional discourse after Chinese officials were seen visiting the site, and activity around the area reportedly increased.
Located in the Rangpur division of Bangladesh, the airfield lies merely 12-20 km from the Indian border and is around 135 km from the strategically critical Siliguri Corridor. This has raised concerns among Indian defense and strategic circles, particularly given the sensitive nature of the region.
