In the Shadows of Influence: Masculinity and Modern Parenting

Since its premiere on March 13, 2025, the gripping limited series "Adolescence" has captured global attention, amassing over 114 million views within just one month—an impressive achievement that underscores its resonance with a diverse audience, including Indian parents.

Its harrowing narrative and bold engagement with a dark yet timely theme has struck a chord with viewers around the world. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that viewers were captivated by the series, which revolves around a 13-year-old boy accused of murdering a classmate.

Everyone involved—his family, therapists, and detectives—was left asking: why? Throughout his childhood, both Eddie and Manda (parents in the series) made sure that Jamie avoided the mistakes—such as underage drinking, smoking, drug use, and premature sexual activity.

They knew where he was and what he was doing at all times when he was out with friends, and he was always at home when he wasn't with them. However, when Jamie was home, he spent most of his time locked in his room, quietly browsing the internet until the early hours of the morning.

Eddie makes a devastating observation in the final episode of the series. He assumed that close proximity would ensure that Jamie would grow up to be a happy, healthy young boy. Eddie even stated that he made a concerted effort to be a better father than his own had been, while Manda poignantly emphasized that both Jamie and his sister were "made" in the same way: "through love."

Regrettably, Jamie's seemingly normal upbringing couldn't prevent his eventual horrific crime.
