HAWA MAHAL: THE PALACE OF WINDS IN JAIPUR

Hawa Mahal, famously known as the “Palace of Winds,” is one of India’s most remarkable architectural wonders.

Built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, it was designed by the architect Lal Chand Ustad, blending the grandeur of Rajput and Mughal styles. The palace is constructed from red and pink sandstone and rises five stories high, with a facade resembling a giant honeycomb. It features 953 small windows, known as jharokhas, each intricately carved with delicate patterns. These windows were more than ornamental—they allowed royal women to observe the bustling streets, processions, and festivals below while remaining unseen, in keeping with the strict purdah system of the time. The palace's unique design also creates a natural cooling effect, letting breezes flow through its structure and providing comfort during hot summers. With its elegant carvings and thoughtful design, Hawa Mahal remains a timeless symbol of Jaipur's royal heritage and architectural brilliance.
