As the aroma of sweets fills the air and homes sparkle with diyas, Diwali becomes a time to celebrate togetherness, gratitude, and indulgence.

From Feasting to Fitness: A Doctor's Take on Post-Diwali Balance

Yet amid the joyous feasting, our health often takes a backseat -with heavy meals, endless sweets, and late nights leading to bloating, fatigue, and digestive distress. Dr. Pankaj Sharma, Director, Department of Bariatric, Robotic, Laparoscopic and General Surgery from Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh and Founder of Shalya Clinic in Rohini New Delhi, reminds everyone that festive enjoyment need not come at the cost of wellbeing. He believes that with a little mindfulness, one can enjoy every festive flavor while keeping the body light, active, and healthy.

"Festivals are meant for enjoyment, not excess. When we eat consciously, our body feels lighter, our mood stays elevated, and we avoid the health setbacks that come from overindulgence," says Dr. Pankaj Sharma.

Dr. Sharma advises practicing portion control as the first step to mindful eating. "Don't deprive yourself, but don't overfill your plate either. Enjoy small portions of your favorite sweets or snacks and savor each bite slowly," he adds. Eating slowly helps the brain register fullness, reducing the chances of overeating.
