Farmers burn effigies over proposed India-US trade pact

Responding to a nationwide call by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), farmers in Faridkot on Wednesday burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump in protest against the proposed India-US free trade agreement.
Protesters warned that allowing duty-free import of US farm produce such as wheat, maize, poultry, and fresh and dry fruits would severely damage Indian agriculture, on which 44 per cent of the population depends for livelihood. They argued that heavily subsidised US farmers with vast land holdings would easily outcompete Indian farmers, the majority
