Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the most widely celebrated and revered festivals in India and among Hindu communities across the globe. Often referred to as the "Festival of Lights," Diwali symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. While its vibrant celebrations, sparkling lamps, sweets, fireworks, and family gatherings are well-known, the festival also carries profound religious and spiritual significance that dates back thousands of years.

DIWALI: ILLUMINATING THE SOUL – THE RELIGIOUS AND SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

The roots of Diwali are embedded deeply in Hindu mythology, where different legends and stories are associated with the festival across regions.

In northern India, the most prominent legend associated with Diwali is the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile. Rama, along with his wife Sita and brother Lakshmana, returned after defeating the demon king Ravana. The people of Ayodhya celebrated their return by lighting rows of oil lamps (diyas), symbolizing the triumph of righteousness. This event is commemorated on Diwali night, when homes are illuminated to welcome Lord Rama and to dispel darkness from life.

In parts of South India, Diwali marks the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon king Narakasura, who had terrorized the heavens and earth. Krishna’s slaying of Narakasura freed thousands of imprisoned women and restored dharma. The second day of Diwali, known as Naraka Chaturdashi or Choti Diwali, is celebrated to mark this divine triumph.

Another widely followed legend is the emergence of Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, fortune, and prosperity, during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) by the gods and demons. Diwali night is considered her birthday, and devotees believe that she visits homes that are clean, well-lit, and filled with devotion. Hence, Lakshmi Puja is a central ritual performed on the main night of Diwali.
