Clear vision in cloudy weather: Eye care tips for the rainy season

Increased humidity, waterlogging, and the spread of bacteria and viruses make your eyes vulnerable to various issues. From conjunctivitis and styes to fungal infections, rainy days can be hard on your vision if proper precautions aren't taken.

WHY EYE INFECTIONS INCREASE DURING MONSOON The monsoon season's warm and humid conditions create an ideal environment for bacteria and fungi to thrive, making eye infections more common. Contaminated water and dirty hands can introduce harmful microorganisms to the eyes, leading to serious infections. Additionally, the damp weather increases airborne allergens like pollen and mold spores, which can trigger allergic eye reactions. During the rainy season, close contact in crowded places such as schools and public transport further spreads highly contagious eye infections. Taking extra care to maintain eye hygiene is crucial during this time to protect your eyes from these risks.

COMMON EYE PROBLEMS DURING RAINY SEASON 1. Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) This is the most common eye infection during the rains. It can be viral, bacterial, or allergic and causes redness, swelling, watery discharge, and itching.

2. Stye (Eyelid Boil) Caused by a bacterial infection of the oil glands near the eyelashes, a stye is a painful red bump that appears on the eyelid.

3. Fungal Infections These are less common but serious. Moist environments and contaminated water or contact lenses can increase the risk.

4. Dry Eyes Despite high humidity, exposure to wind, pollutants, and long screen times indoors can lead to dry eyes and irritation.

5. Allergic Reactions Mold, pollen, and dust mites can trigger eye allergies, especially in people with pre-existing sensitivities.
