Big shift in Punjab politics as Akal Takht launches enrolment drive for SAD

The Akal Takht has constituted a five-member panel to launch a 'parallel' enrolment drive for Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), signalling a major shift in Punjab's political and religious landscape.
The decision comes as the rift between the Akal Takht and the existing SAD leadership deepens.
Breaking away from previous discussions about modifying the party's name by either adding a suffix or omitting 'Shiromani', the new drive has been initiated under the name 'Shiromani Akali Dal' itself.
Unlike the SAD's official membership campaign, which charged Rs 10 per member under the leadership of working president Balwinder Singh Bhunder, the Akal Takht-backed drive is offering free enrolment.
