In the southern reaches of Rajasthan, far from the well-traveled tourist paths, lies a lesser-known gem that is a striking departure from the arid desert landscapes that dominate the rest of the state. This gem is Banswara, a region that has earned the moniker "City of Hundred Islands." Tucked away between the Aravalli Hills and the Mahi Dam, Banswara is a district filled with lush greenery, scenic views, and a rich tribal culture that remains largely untouched by the waves of mass tourism. Known for its tranquil rivers, rolling hills, and historical significance, Banswara stands as an oasis in the desert, with its unique geography and vibrant traditions offering a refreshing contrast to the rest of Rajasthan.
While Rajasthan is often associated with its golden deserts and sun-baked landscapes, Banswara is a breath of fresh air. The district is blessed with a generous amount of rainfall, receiving an annual average of 900 mm, compared to the much drier areas of Rajasthan, like Jaisalmer, which gets only about 146.88 mm of rainfall. Due to this, Banswara is one of the greenest regions in the state, with its rolling hills, dense forests, and verdant fields, making it a rare haven in a state otherwise known for its arid climate.
This unique geography has earned Banswara several nicknames, including "Cherrapunji of Rajasthan," owing to its high rainfall. However, the most endearing and intriguing name is "City of Hundred Islands," which refers to the numerous small islands on the River Mahi that flow through the region. These islands, scattered across the river, lend Banswara its distinctive charm, creating a picturesque landscape unlike any other in Rajasthan. The sight of lush green islands amidst the flowing river in a desert state is an anomaly that captivates anyone fortunate enough to visit.
