SADC troops leave DRC

Southern African troops have started evacuating the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where they had been stranded since a January offensive by the M23 armed group, a regional official said yesterday.

The 16-nation Southern African Development Community (SADC) decided last month to end its deployment to the mineral-rich country after 17 of its soldiers were killed in the conflict.
"They started moving. It is part of the withdrawal plan, nothing unusual," the SADC official said, confirming reports in local newspapers. "Soldiers are moving by road to Tanzania."
