City has no space for your waste
The Citizen
|March 13, 2026
Waste collection in Johannesburg is lagging, but the city says this is due to space, not its employees.
Much of this month has seen protests and delays in Pikitup refuse removal as the city scrambles to provide one of its basic services.
The metro confirmed on Wednesday it had limited space to dump the mountains of trash created by its residents.
Joburg has four large landfill sites servicing 12 regional depots managing waste collection.
The landfills are reaching capacity, with only two currently accepting residential waste.
"These disruptions are primarily linked to limited landfill availability, with only Goudkoppies and Robinson Deep landfill sites currently fully operational," the city said on Wednesday.

Cyril's talk taken with pinch of salt
While it's refreshing to hear President Cyril Ramaphosa insisting that no-one - not even those with links to him - will be shielded from the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry's findings, forgive us for taking this talk with a pinch of salt, as numerous inquiries and commissions set up by government have led to little, if any, justice.
