Venues in the running for World Cup
The Chronicle
|November 29, 2025
NEWCASTLE United's St James’ Park and Sunderland's Stadium of Light are among the proposed stadiums in the UK's bid for the 2035 FIFA Women's World Cup.
-
The bid was officially submitted yesterday, with the UK hoping to host what could be the biggest single-sport event ever held in the UK.
The two North East cities are among 16 proposed host cities for the tournament, which includes 22 stadia.
If successful, FIFA will reduce that total to make up the final lineup of cities which will host games in 10 years.
The bid has received support from North East Mayor Kim McGuinness and the North East Combined Authority (NECA), with the theme of ‘All Together’ and a focus on inclusivity and inspiring the next generation.
