Time for United to dominate Wembley...

DURING the early fifties when the horrors of Hitler’s Second World War were beginning to be confined to shuddering memory Newcastle United dominated Wembley and the FA Cup to gain a formidable reputation.

- JOHNGIBSON

Three times the Mags descended upon the smoke and three times they returned with the big prize. In 51, 52 and 55 the old pot was draped with black and white ribbons with the likes of Wor Jackie, Bobby Mitchell and Bobby Cowell collecting an array of winner's medals.

Well, let the modern United have a pop at dominating Wembley again, this time in League Cup finals having appeared at our national stadium twice in the last three years culminating in us claiming our first trophy after a long dry period leaving every Geordie throat parched.

Ambitious? Yes of course but why not? We have waited in a queue for long enough. Shy bairns get nowt and we can all remember the soaring outpouring of joy when United brought back the Carabao Cup this March. Would we like that again? Of course we would.

Let Eddie Howe aim at following in the footsteps of the great managers of history who have dominated this particular competition. Brian Clough and Nottingham Forest won it in 78 and 79, were finalists in 80, and triumphed again in 89 and 90.
