Nissan's Sunderland plant could soon produce Chinese cars

WORKERS at Nissan's Sunderland plant could start making Chinese cars from next year under a new agreement announced on Wednesday.

Nissan has partnered with Chery, a Chinese state-owned brand which is the country's third largest brand.

The deal could see Chery cars roll off the Sunderland plant's Line One production line, which was paused earlier this year amid large-scale cost-saving efforts across Nissan.

Under the terms of the agreement, the Washington facility would remain fully owned by Nissan, with around 6,000 workers there still employed by the Japanese automotive giants.

Discussions about the idea are said to be ongoing.
