Metro bosses 'not happy' with leaking air con units as search for fix goes on

A FAULT with the new Tyne and Wear Metro trains' leaking air con units remains unresolved and it is now hoped that the problem can be fixed next year.

Water was seen pouring from the ceiling of some of the Metro's £362million new fleet this summer, as the Swiss-built trains struggled to cope with long hours of running in heatwave temperatures.

The issue caused some of the trains to be pulled from service during hot weather in June and July, with bosses saying that condensation from their heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems was draining too slowly and leaking through the air vents into the carriage.

Councillors were told on Tuesday that two attempts to resolve the problem had proved unsuccessful so far, but there is hope that a permanent fix will be installed in the coming months to avoid further frustration for passengers once temperatures rise again.
