JESMOND Food Market has issued a statement asking visitors to "make the responsible choice" after a dog-on-dog attack on Saturday afternoon.

The incident occurred at around 2pm, and has been described as "disappointing and very alarming" by organiser Chris Jewitt.

It reportedly saw a Staffordshire terrier attack a beagle puppy in the street food area of the market based in Jesmond Dene, and in a statement, Local Heroes NE described how the incident is the first of its kind in the six years that the market has been going.

Organisers have encouraged dog owners to leave their pets at home if they have concerns about their behaviour in a busy environment, as well as thanking members of the public who intervened.
