CALLS FOR URGENT ACTION AT PEDESTRIAN CROSSING

- By AUSTEN SHAKESPEARE

'I've almost been hit a fair few times'

Jack Johnson is concerned about traffic at a pedestrian crossing on Gateshead High Street

A PEDESTRIAN crossing in Gateshead town centre remains unchanged despite concerns over near misses being raised more than a year ago.

Last year, Jack Johnson shared his worry over motorists mistakenly driving through the High Street pedestrian crossing despite the green crossing light showing.

The 'potentially dangerous' High Street and Charles Street crossing was first brought to the attention of Gateshead Council this time last year, however, no solutions have yet been found.

This is depite council officers agreeing with Jack, who first wrote to the local authority on December 2, 2024. In a Freedom of Information (FOI) request obtained by Jack, it was recorded that a council officer wrote back: "I took a look out today [December 2, 2024] and witnessed what you described."

They continued: "...I have asked that I [sic] plan be drawn up to introduce a yellow box junction at this location and hopefully introduce it in the next financial year".
