Hit-and-run horror on 'lethal' local road

STUNNED neighbours in a Newcastle suburb rushed to help as a hit and run victim lay injured in the road outside their homes.

Police are hunting the driver who left the man seriously injured after hitting him, with what officers believe to be a Jaguar, in Fenham.

The victim, who is in his 40s, remains in a critical condition in hospital following the incident on Friday. Today, people living close to the scene, on Bavington Drive in Fenham, described the aftermath of the collision as they told of their anger at the fast and reckless way motorists drive down the street.

Etan McGuire, 28, said: "I just heard a bump at the time. I thought someone had hit the kerb. Then the police came round to ask if I had any door bell footage. It is quite bad here. It's one of those streets where people think they can get away with it. I hear stuff all the time."
