Chip, chip hooray for 100th year

A North East chippy and 'renowned' restaurant is celebrating 100 years since it opened its doors for the first time.

In 1926, Colmans on Ocean Road opened, with the South Shields business going on to become one of the most well-known in the region.

Beginning with a small shack on South Shields beach back in 1905, and taking over other locations over the next two decades, it was the opening of the Ocean Road shop that cemented Colmans as a mainstay of the coastal South Tyneside town.

The adjacent buildings were acquired gradually, with another major step taken in 2017.

This was the opening of the Seafood Temple, built in the local landmark known as 'Ghan-dis Temple' from 1931, which was an old bandstand on South Shields Beach.
