VACCINES BEYOND COVID: WHY IMMUNIZATION STILL MATTERS
The Business Guardian
|October 03, 2025
The COVID-19 pandemic reshaped the way we think about health, science, and global preparedness.

For the first time in decades, vaccines became a daily topic of conversation, debated in homes, workplaces, and governments. While COVID-19 vaccines saved millions of lives and highlighted the importance of rapid immunization, the focus on one disease has sometimes overshadowed the broader role of vaccines in protecting public health. Beyond COVID, immunization continues to be one of the most powerful tools in modern medicine — preventing disease, saving lives, and strengthening communities.
A Century of Protection
Vaccines are not new heroes. For over a hundred years, they have shielded humanity from diseases that once claimed countless lives. Smallpox was eradicated globally in 1980, thanks to a worldwide vaccination effort — a milestone that remains one of the greatest public health achievements. Polio, which once paralyzed thousands of children each year, is now on the brink of eradication, with just a few countries reporting cases. Measles, tetanus, hepatitis, influenza, and many other illnesses have been significantly reduced or controlled because of widespread immunization programs.
When vaccination rates drop, preventable diseases return. Measles outbreaks have been reported in several countries where immunization programs slowed during the pandemic. Without continued vigilance, diseases once thought controlled can quickly resurface.
