Apra Ekadashi, also known as Vishnu Ekadashi, is a significant fasting day in the Hindu calendar, celebrated during the Krishna Paksha (the waning phase of the moon) in the month of Ashadha (June-July). This day is considered auspicious for fasting, prayers, and devotion to Lord Vishnu, and it holds special importance for devotees seeking to purify their minds and souls.
THE MYTHOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF APRA EKADASHI
The story behind Apra Ekadashi is closely linked to Lord Vishnu and the ancient scriptures. According to Hindu mythology, Ekadashi is the day when Lord Vishnu is said to rest in his cosmic abode, the Ksheera Sagar (the ocean of milk), during which he refrains from interacting with the world. On this day, Lord Vishnu is believed to be in a deep slumber, and it is a time for his devotees to perform special rituals and prayers to honor him and receive his divine blessings.
The Vrata (fasting) observed on Apra Ekadashi is said to remove the accumulated sins of the devotees, purify their hearts, and help them achieve peace, prosperity, and spiritual progress. The fast is believed to cleanse the soul of all negative energies, helping the devotee attain Moksha or liberation from the cycle of life and death.
THE LEGEND OF APRA EKADASHI
The story of Apra Ekadashi is believed to have been narrated by Lord Krishna to King Yudhishthira, the eldest Pandava. Lord Krishna explains that on the day of Apra Ekadashi, a devoted person who observes fasting with true faith and sincerity, chanting the name of Lord Vishnu, will be freed from all sins.
The most popular story associated with this Ekadashi is that of a demon named Muran, who had caused immense suffering to the gods and sages. Muran was a powerful demon who used his immense strength and terror to oppress the people of the world. His growing cruelty and evil deeds made the gods very anxious, and they turned to Lord Vishnu for help.
