The Evolution of Artillery Training in Rajasthan: From Royal Cannons to Modern Military Excellence

Rajasthan has played a pivotal role in India’s military history, not only as the land of legendary warriors but also as an important centre for the evolution of artillery warfare and military training.
From the early use of primitive gunpowder weapons in medieval kingdoms to the establishment of world-class artillery training institutions after Independence, Rajasthan’s vast deserts, open plains, and strategic geography have made it an ideal location for artillery development. Today, the state is home to some of India’s most significant artillery training establishments and firing ranges, reflecting centuries of military innovation and preparedness.
EARLY BEGINNINGS OF ARTILLERY IN RAJASTHAN
The introduction of artillery in Rajasthan coincided with the arrival of gunpowder weapons in the Indian subcontinent during the late medieval period. While Rajput kingdoms had traditionally relied on cavalry, swordsmen, archers, and war elephants, the emergence of cannons transformed battlefield tactics.
Initially, artillery pieces were employed mainly in the defence of forts. Massive stone and bronze cannons were mounted on the ramparts of forts such as Jaigarh Fort, Chittorgarh Fort, Jaisalmer Fort, and Mehrangarh Fort to repel invading armies. These weapons required trained operators capable of handling gunpowder, aiming heavy cannons, and maintaining complex firing mechanisms.
Although formal artillery schools did not exist during this period, practical training was imparted within royal armies through apprenticeship, where experienced gunners trained younger soldiers in loading, firing, maintenance, and battlefield deployment.
By the sixteenth century, artillery had become an integral component of warfare across Rajasthan. The growing influence of the Mughal Empire introduced more sophisticated cannon technology, including field artillery capable of accompanying advancing armies.
Rajput rulers gradually adopted these developments while retaining their distinctive military traditions. Royal foundries manufactured cannons of varying sizes, and dedicated artillery units were organized within several princely states.
