Supreme Court issues notice to ED in Abbas Ansari's bail petition in money laundering case

The Supreme Court in the case Abbas Ansari v. Directorate of Enforcement, Allahabad observed and has issued notice wherein the Special leave petition is filed by Abbas Ansari, MLA from Mau from Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party, against the order of the Allahabad High Court denying bail to him in the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 case.

On May 09, the Allahabad High Court in the case observed and has denied bail to Abbas Ansari, wherein the court noted that it could not persuade itself to form a prima facie satisfaction as per Section 45 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, PMLA, at this, the applicant is not guilty or may not commit an offence on bail.

On May 15, the bench comprising of Justice Surya Kant and Justice KV Viswanathan in the case allowed Abbas Ansari to attend a private prayer service held in the memory of his late father late gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari, on June 11 and June 12.

The bench comprising of Justice M.M. Sundresh and Justice Sandeep Mehta was hearing the present matter.

The counsel, Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal appearing for Ansari submitted that, ‘If you are an Ansari, you have to be in Jail. That is what the respondents say.’
