Onion prices rise; government sells more buffer stock

As the average retail price of onions across India witnesses a steep 57 percent increase, rising to Rs 47 per kg, the central government has taken steps to alleviate the burden on consumers by enhancing the sale of buffer onions at a subsidized rate of Rs 25 per kg in retail markets.

Data maintained by the Consumer Affairs Ministry reveals that the all-India average retail price of onions surged to Rs 47 per kg on Friday, a significant upswing from Rs 30 per kg during the same period last year. In the national capital, the retail price of onions reached Rs 40 per kg on Friday, compared to Rs 30 per kg a year ago.
