DO SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES RESTRICT OR LIBERATE US?
The Business Guardian
|March 07, 2026
Moral edicts, spiritual teachings, and codes of conduct have shaped people's lives for ages.
Some welcome them as guiding signposts that help us progress and navigate life's many challenges.Others dismiss them as restrictive rules that curb personal freedom and make life dull. Still others regard them with suspicion, viewing them as tools of control wielded by those in positions of authority.
However, if we consider the intent behind such teachings - they are meant to uplift souls by elevating the quality of their consciousness, and to guide them to the right path - we realise the benefit in them.
All souls are originally pure, peaceful, loving, and powerful. These qualities are intrinsic to our true identity, which is why all of us like to experience purity, peace, and love. It is when these are lacking, or denied to us, that we feel unease and sorrow. Spiritual teachings are not artificial ideas being imposed on human nature. They remind us of who we truly are, and serve as a compass directing us back to our original state of soul-consciousness.
When moral and spiritual principles advise purity, honesty, humility, and self-discipline, they are not restricting us — they are protecting us. Just as traffic laws prevent accidents and preserve order, spiritual laws protect the soul from sorrow. Weaknesses such as anger, greed, attachment, ego, and lust are the real chains that bind us. They lead to conflict, broken relationships, and inner emptiness. Spiritual wisdom frees us from these inner enemies.
