March 19, 2026

The day of Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (March 30, 1949) is very important in the history of Rajasthan.

- Bhajanlal Sharma Chief Minister, Rajasthan

A RICH HERITAGE, A STRONG PRESENT, AND A RESOLVE FOR A DEVELOPED FUTURE

On this day, with the efforts of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Greater Rajasthan was officially formed in Jaipur. This day also marks the Indian New Year and symbolizes new beginnings, hope, and progress. Rajasthan Day celebrates the rich culture, unity, and proud heritage of the state, and people extend greetings and good wishes to all.

The formation of Rajasthan happened in several steps. First, on March 17, 1948, the Matsya Union was formed with Alwar, Bharatpur, Dholpur, and Karauli. Then, on March 25, 1948, the Rajasthan Union was created with Kota, Bundi, Jhalawar, Tonk, Dungarpur, Banswara, Pratapgarh, Kishangarh, and Shahpura. On April 18, 1948, Mewar joined, forming United Rajasthan. Finally, on March 30, 1949, major states like Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Jaisalmer merged to form Greater Rajasthan. In 1956, Ajmer and Mount Abu were added, completing present-day Rajasthan.

This land of valor, self-respect, and indomitable courage still keeps its glorious traditions alive. Stretching from the vast Thar Desert to the Aravalli mountain ranges, this state is a wonderful confluence of natural diversity and cultural richness. Our magnificent forts, mansions, temples, folk songs, folk dances, and colorful fairs and festivals are Rajasthan's unique identity. Despite limited water resources and harsh geographical conditions, its residents have established new dimensions of development through their hard work and determination.
