DUHAN VAN DER MERWE faces a race against the clock to make the British and Irish Lions squad after having a hush-hush op.

The Scotland winger has been sidelined since damaging ankle ligaments in Edinburgh's win over the Dragons last month.

The South African-born flier had an MRI scan, with head coach Sean Everitt saying at the time he expected his return before the end of the season.

Edinburgh have made no mention of van der Merwe having had surgery in their weekly injury updates.

But Everitt let slip after the Gunners' 18-17 loss to the Sharks on Friday he'd gone under the knife.
