More than 1600 dead after quake rocks Thailand and Myanmar

RESCUE teams were last night facing a frantic race against the clock to rescue stricken victims of the earthquake which has left more than 1600 people dead in Myanmar and Thailand.

The 7.7-magnitude quake reduced skyscrapers and homes to rubble in a matter of moments at about midday on Friday, trapping people below the twisted wrecks.

More than 90 people were buried below the collapsed remains of an apartment block in Mandalay, Myanmar, near the epicentre of the massive quake.

In Kyaukse, also in the Mandalay region, the West Mye Mye Kyi preschool was flattened by the disaster, with reports that at least 50 children and six teachers were missing.
