But Volodymr Zelensky and Donald Trump sat face-to-face yesterday in one of Catholicism's holiest sites to discuss peace.

The US president and Ukrainian leader were in St Peter's Basilica on the day of the Pope's funeral.

Afterwards Zelensky said his meeting with Trump at the heart of the Vatican City had the “potential to become historic”.

The basilica is a place of prayer where visitors are required to display “respectful” behaviour.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French president Emmanuel Macron were also snapped alongside Zelensky and Trump in pictures from the encounter.
