Well ace Eythor loves his Haaland nickname

- Fraser Wilson

WITH his blond locks, powerful frame and Norwegian blood there was only ever likely to be one nickname for Eythor Bjorgolfsson when the goals started to flow.

The 'Vermont Haaland', as he was dubbed by punters in the lower rungs of US soccer, could think of worse things to be called.

But while the 6ft 4in frontman might have many things in common with his compatriot at Manchester City, he's only interested in seeing his own name up in lights now he has landed in Motherwell.

Bjorgolfsson is certain he can add a new dimension to Jens Berthel Askou's fabulous free-flowing football with some added power at the top end after signing from Umea in Sweden.

He has certainly taken the scenic route to Fir Park from his native Norway, via Brussels, Kentucky, Vermont, Seattle and back in Scandinavia.

And he has scored goals at every stop on the way.

But Motherwell is home now and the 25-year-old is determined to become a household name in Lanarkshire four years on from blasting on to the scene at Vermont Green in the USL League Two.

Six goals in 10 games there saw him land the Haaland nickname.

And Bjorgolfsson laughed: "Yeah! That's true. They love that back in the US, you know.
