Eco crimes in SNP sights

Landmark legislation supported by Martin

THE Scottish Government will throw its weight behind Labour MSP Monica Lennon's landmark Ecocide Bill ahead of its first parliament vote.

SNP minister Gillian Martin signalled the move at a Holyrood committee last week, which could see Scotland become the first part of the UK to create a crime of mass environmental destruction.

Under Lennon's plans, the worst eco criminals could face up to 20 years in jail and huge fines if prosecuted.
