(UCAN) Muslim leaders and rights activists have slammed Sri Lanka's Customs Department for withholding a consignment of Tamil-language Qurans for more than a year after claiming it violated regulations.
The department seized the Qurans — sent as a gift for local Muslims, the majority of them Tamil-speakers, from Saudi Arabia’s King Fahd Complex — on May 16, 2024, media reports say.
The consignment remains impounded despite Muslim leaders’ repeated requests that it be released.
Sri Lanka’s Human Rights Commission called on the government last week to release the Qurans following a complaint lodged by an attorney on behalf of the Muslim community, The Island Online reported on Oct. 21.
