Balancing life through needles
Sunday Island
|September 14, 2025
In the quiet heart of Kalubowila, a growing number of patients are turning to an age-old practice of relief, healing and balance-acupuncture.
At the forefront of this wellness journey is Dr. Prasad Deshapriya, an educated practitioner who has been blending traditional wisdom with modern medical insight to help patients overcome chronic pain, stress and lifestyle related conditions.
Dr. Prasad explains 'Acupuncture is only about treating illness but about restoring harmony in the body's energy flow. Patients often come to me after years of medication and feel a difference within weeks. Dr Prasad's liking to acupuncture started in a village kitchen filled with herbs. From childhood, Prasad watched his family prepare herbal remedies. That immersion made it natural for him to blend traditional therapies with scientific discipline, he later acquired under Prof Anton Jayasuriya He then broadened his expertise with training courses and workshops abroad, learning traditional techniques and modern evidence-based approaches.
When I walked into his calm and minimalistic clinic, the sight of fine needles placed precisely at points on the body of patients may appear unusual. Yet, when I spoke to some patients, for them it has become a trusted pathway to managing migraines, arthritis, insomnia and even illnesses like diabetics.
What makes this practice in Kalubowila stand out?
Dr. Prasad said it's my personal care. Every treatment plan is often tailored after careful consultation.
Each patient has a unique health journey so I curate my medical prescription to their needs.
He also said "The body has an incredible ability to heal itself if we give it the right guidance.
Dr. Prasad adds with a smile. Acupuncture simply helps unlock that potential.
