Futuristic protein bar... with air and electricity!

A CHOCOLATE bar packed with a futuristic protein made from air and electricity could soon be on shelves across the country.

The Taste the Future snack bar has been launched by Finnish food giant Fazer and contains a powder called Solein — an artificial protein developed by feeding microbes with gas.

The single microbe has a diet of carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen and minerals, and is grown in a tank using electricity instead of sunlight.

No soil, plants or animals are involved in the process, which is claimed to be the ultimate “free-from” protein, as well as using far less water and land than normal food production.

The end result is a neutral-tasting, yellow powder which is rich in iron and vitamin B12.
