Charles backs Canada with parliament trip

KING Charles will show his support for Canada's sovereignty when he opens the country's parliament on Tuesday after US President Donald Trump said he wanted it to become the 51st state, former diplomats said.

The monarch will be the first to open Canada's parliament in almost 70 years after an invitation was extended by newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney. It will be King Charles and Queen Camilla's first state visit there, which starts tomorrow, since taking the throne.

Jeremy Kinsman, the former Canadian high commissioner to the UK from 2000 to 2002 and who worked with Charles when he was Prince of Wales, said that his speech as Canada's head of state will be written on the advice of Canada's government.
