But however people eventually refer to events at Trafalgar Road last Saturday, everyone will surely agree that they constituted some of the most remarkable cricket the great old ground has ever seen.

The facts are simple: captaining the first team in Dean Skelton’s only absence of the season, Bobby Wincer opted to bat against Sefton Park and saw his side collapse to 68 for eight; then the stand-in captain put on 96 for the ninth wicket with Muhammad Kashif, reaching his maiden senior fifty in the process.

Kashif then took his own score to 62 and put on an unbroken 46 for the last wicket with Tom Crew before Wincer declared on 210 for nine, one over after the scheduled tea interval.

In reply, Sefton Park reached 133 for two and seemed well placed to win the game after a few of the final twenty overs. Instead of which, Wincer and Kashif took five wickets apiece and S&B won by 44 runs when only eight balls remained in the match.
