'Saturated by shame' – but the challenges of menopause can be tackled
Shields Gazette
|October 18, 2025
Today - October 18 - is World Menopause Day, created to raise awareness of menopause and improve the experience of women around the world.
-
Founded by the International Menopause Society (IMS) in 2009, each year has a different theme, a White Paper and accessible resources to support women, healthcare professionals and communities worldwide.
The IMS says that while it celebrates the many medical advances and the massive increase in public awareness in recent years, there is still much more to be done.
Each year, it shines a light on the challenges facing women during the menopause transition and highlight improvements in research, education and support.
The 2025 theme is Lifestyle Medicine, looking at the impact everyday choices in areas such as nutrition, sleep, movement and stress management can have on managing symptoms and supporting long-term health and well-being.
This year's White Paper, The Role of Lifestyle Medicine in Menopausal Health: A Review of Non-Pharmacologic Interventions, is a global review that highlights how lifestyle medicine can ease menopausal symptoms, reduce chronic-disease risk and support women's long-term health, serving as a practical, evidence-based resource for healthcare professionals worldwide.
The IMS has created six accompanying factsheets, sharing guidance on healthy eating, physical activity, mental wellbeing, avoiding risky substances, restorative sleep and nurturing healthy relationships.
