PETER CAPALDI

Sweet Illusions ★★★★

(Last Night From Glasgow)

Don't dismiss this as an actory vanity project from former Doctor Who and The Thick Of It star Capaldi. In his youth he was in an 80s post-punk group alongside comedian turned US chat-show host Craig Ferguson, and this is a second solo album in four years. Blow Monkeys front man Dr Robert takes production duties and cajoles a fine performance and songwriting talent from the acerbic Scot. Tracks like Hanger Lane, Bin Night, Not Going Anywhere and The Big Guy are excellent retro-pop moments.

TUNDE ADEBIMPE

Thee Black Boltz

★★★ (Sub Pop)

Adebimpe is best known as vocalist for American art-rockers TV On The Radio, who broke a lengthy silence to tour last year as their 2004 debut album celebrated its 20th anniversary. This is his first solo album, and prefers to mimic the poppier moments the band had over their career, rather than the more angular sound they are most renowned for. Pinstick grabs a little moment from the personal swinging On A Star, while on ILY he uses a deeper register above a pretty acoustic guitar.

GREY DELISLE

The Grey DeLisle

★★★ (Hummble Bird)
