GETTING TO THE HEART OF MEDICAL MATTERS

The skin on my arms and thighs is really rough and dry, with what look like small goosebumps. It’s been like this for years, ever since | was a teenager | think. I've tried scrubbing at it and applying a moisturiser, but if there is any effect, it doesn’t last very long. I'm really conscious of it at this time of year, when my arms and legs are not covered by clothing. Is there anything else I can do about?

I suspect you have keratosis pilaris, a skin condition where hair follicles become blocked with keratin, a hard protein that is found in skin that helps protect it from injury and infection.

Why this happens isn't known, but it's a common condition that often starts in childhood or adolescence, which can run in families, and also tends to occur more in people with very dry skin or eczema.

Though it is harmless, many of those affected feel self-conscious about it. Using an exfoliating scrub or loofah can smooth the skin a little, but don't be too vigorous, as it can make dryness worse.

Creams that contain chemicals that can help to loosen and remove dead skin cells, such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), lactic or salicylic acid or urea can be helpful, and bought from chemists. However, they can cause inflammation and stinging, so should be used with care on very dry skins or those with eczema.

Skin products containing retinoids, which can help prevent blocked hair follicles, can also be useful, and while weaker strength ones are available to buy, the stronger, more effective ones are only available on prescription.
