Detectorist strikes gold from Iron Age

A VAST Iron Age hoard found by a detectorist may rewrite the history of the elite residents of northern Britain 2,000 years ago.

The Melsonby Hoard, from two ditches near the North Yorkshire village, has more than 800 items such as remains of wagons, spears and harnesses.

Experts say the 2021 discovery by Peter Heads may be one of the most important ever.

It had been thought riches and power in pre-Roman times lay in the South but the dumped hoard disproves that.
