Late winner foils Buddies

- Michael Gannon

BRENDAN RODGERS has vowed Celtic will be ready for the Champions League despite an opening-day scare against St Mirren yesterday.

The Hoops needed a late Luke McCowan strike for a 1-0 win to avoid the party going flat on Flag Day at Parkhead.

Celtic struggled to find a cutting edge against stubborn Saints but eventually netted through the sub on 87 minutes to ensure a winning start.

Rodgers insisted he was delighted with the display but admitted he’s still looking to strengthen his squad.

Centre-back Jahmai Simpson-Pusey was at Celtic Park yesterday and his loan move from Manchester City will be confirmed today.

Rodgers is also desperate to add more firepower but is adamant his Bhoys will be up for a Champions League playoff in a little over a fortnight.

Celts will learn who they will face in the showdown in today’s draw in Nyon.
