83 dead, 3 arrests after blaze

THE inferno that engulfed a complex of high-rise buildings in Hong Kong killed at least 83 people, with hundreds still missing, it was confirmed yesterday.

Nearly 300 residents of the Wang Fuk Court public housing complex remained unaccounted for as authorities said the blaze was “basically under control”.

Meanwhile survivors were settling in where they could for a second night, as donations of food, clothing and money flooded in.

Outside one temporary shelter a woman sobbed: “My baby is dead. I am the mum who keeps posting nonstop on social media trying to find my baby. I cannot find my father-in-law or mother-in-law either.

“The firefighters said they found a baby and an adult in the flat with no signs of life. I don't know what to do.

“My baby was born after so much hardship.”
