LORD Mandelson's £75,000 taxpayer-funded payout for being sacked as US ambassador was seen as "value for money", a minister has claimed.

Labour's Nick Thomas-Symonds yesterday tried to defend the amount given to the ex-diplomat by pointing out that Mandelson asked for his contract to be paid out in full — more than £500,000.
