Unlucky Wids denied as rain arrives

WIDNES could count themselves a tad unlucky as the weather caused Saturday's game to be abandoned with the home side needing just five wickets to gain their first league win of the season.

Operating under the win, lose and draw game format, Widnes posted a reasonable score of 239, having been asked to bat first. In reply, Neston had progressed to 155 for five when the rain came. An opportunity missed perhaps, but Widnes skipper Alex Hewitt will be relieved to end a run of five league losses.

The match began with Widnes being asked to bat first, with Chris Kirby being promoted up the order. This tactic failed to have any impact, as Kirby managed to run himself out for just a single.
