'We have let victims down in the past'

"We've acknowledged in the past that we haven't served victims the way we should have done, but now we've invested, we're learning, we're getting better and we've specialist officers now to deal with victims, which is really important.

"The centre of this is victims, with all the ripples of the work coming out from it, but the actual centre is the victims and the accounts we get from them and all the work that we do on the back of that. They're absolutely crucial to it, and they're at the centre of it."

He added: "From a force point of view, in recognising and really publicly recognising that we've let victims down in the past, together with these results that we're seeing now at court, victims recognise that we are committed to what they're doing, we're in a whole different place now than what we were then."

Chris Trotter, Senior District Crown Prosecutor from the Crown Prosecution Service's Organised Child Sexual Abuse Unit, described some of the challenges of prosecuting a historic case.
