THE pub industry has been a topic of discussion for a lot of people this week.

Whilst it started quite negatively with reports that further financial support which could prove vital for the future of pubs was reportedly being blocked by the Chancellor, there has since been a glimmer of hope.It has been suggested that ministers could be about to announce a U-turn on rising business rates for pubs in the next few days. Pubs have been facing the prospect of much higher business rates after the Chancellor announced plans to end Covid-era discounts at her budget in November.

‘The government had put in place a £4.3billion fund to help pubs with the transition to higher rates, but those in the industry have said more assistance was necessary as venues continue to shutter in droves.

Whilst we all wait for news on whether a bit of relief could be on its way, there’s no choice but to continue with business as normal.

That's exactly what Dan and Nicola, who run the charming The Baum, in Rochdale. Whilst acknowledging its a ‘a constant battle’ to battle, the pair say its the community and their spirit which keeps them in their job - and say they continue to love every second of their job.

Once named the national pub of the year by CAMRA, the characteristic and quirky pub on Toad Lane has been described by the beer lover's association as being a venue that has ‘never let the mantle slip! It has a big reputation for ale drinkers, but its cosy surroundings and its hearty food menu also earn big praise too. Their menu features a varied selection of delights, including a Back Pudding Scotch Egg, Sticky BBQ Chilli Ribs, a homemade Cheese and Onion pie, and, of course, local staple Rag Pudding. There’s also a range of breakfasts, sharers, and a sandwich menu, featuring the likes of hot beef and onion and even a ‘posh’ fish finger butty.
