The Enigma of the Beautiful Game

Fernando Jose Torres Sanz, famously known as Fernando Torres is one of the most elegant, yet lethal strikers the beautiful game of football has ever seen and produced.

Known as El Nino, meaning ‘The Kid’ in Spanish for his ever-youth-ful appearance and his blonde hair, Fernando Torres was born and brought up in the community of Fuenlabrada in Madrid, Spain. He originally wanted to be a goalkeeper but destiny had the opposite plan for him. Instead of stopping and preventing the opposition from scoring goals, he gained the habit of crushing the opponents with his many goals pertaining to his electric pace, clinical finishing and strength.

Torres started his exciting footballing career with his favourite boyhood club-Atletico Madrid and gained much prominence for becoming their captain at just the mere age of 19. His bond with the club started with love and eventually became spiritual in his later career. His form while at Atletico helped him gain much interest from the top professional clubs in Europe, including Chelsea who were desperate to procure him.

Finally, in 2007 Fernando Torres signed for the legendary English Premier League club Liverpool for a fee which was supposed to be the highest purchase at that time in Liverpool's history. Torres immediately became a fan favourite owing to his fantastic form in his first season at the club, scoring 33 goals and eventually became the fastest player to score 50 league goals for Liverpool. His marvellous finishing and his tactical brilliance terrorized even the best defenders such as Manchester United's Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, who concluded that facing Torres on the pitch was nothing less than a nightmare. His majestic performances for Liverpool led him to finishing third for both the Ballon D'Or and the FIFA World Player of the year in 2008, just behind Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Fernando Torres had established himself as one of the best players in the world and Liverpool supporters fell in love with his number 9 jersey and also his magnificent partnership on the pitch with the Liverpool ultra-legend Steven Gerrard.
